THUNDEROUS applause, whistles and loud cheers accompanied Karina Abdullah when she was declared the Jumbo Queen 2010 and walked home with RM5,000, trophy and sash. She competed against nine other women for the title.
Organised by Sungei Wang Plaza, Jumbo Queen 2010 was open to both single and married female Malaysians aged 18 years and above and weighed at least 80kg.
Thirty participated in Heat 1 and Heat 2, out of which 10 were selected for the final.
The selection of winners was made based on their stage personality, confidence, overall impression and crowd response.
“I am so happy to have won this competition. This is my first competition and I never expected to win, so this is a huge bonus. I think I won the competition because of my cheerful and friendly character,” said Karina.
“Despite being 107kg, I am comfortable with my voluptuous figure. So my message to all plus-size women is they should enjoy life because they are also beautiful and talented,” she said.
The 24-year-old saw her weight doubled within nine years. Her lightest weight was 55kg when she was 15 years old.
After several failed attempts to reduce her weight, Karina began to be more positive and accepted her vital statistics of 48-42-51.
Nevertheless, she still maintains a healthy lifestyle and socialises with her friends.

Lee Hui Leng, 33, who hails from Jinjang, Selangor, was the second runner-up. She also won the Mix FM Most Popular Choice Award.
Most Talented Jumbo Queen title went to Diana Lau Siew Ching, who performed an energetic belly dance, while the Most Charming Jumbo Queen title went to Michell Ching.
Nuraqilah Rosli won the Most Popular Jumbo Queen title.
All prizes were presented by Sungei Wang Plaza senior manager (promotions and public relations) K. K. Lim.
Lim said the Jumbo Queen was first organised by Sungei Wang Plaza in 2007 with a huge success.
“The response that we have received has been tremendous and extremely encouraging from both contestants and supporters.
“All the contestants put on a great show and put their heart into the competition. It gives us a reason to make this event an annual event,” said Lim.
